Preparing for a Wedding Part 1: The Prep Shots by Jake Aldrich of Epic Dallas Wedding Photography

Planning a wedding can be a stressful experience, but good Dallas wedding photographers can make the planning process much easier. Unless the couple has a coordinator for the day of the wedding, the wedding photographer will be the one directing the events and keeping the bride and groom on schedule. It’s important that the wedding photographer is prepared for all of the events that are planned, which means that the bride and groom need to make time to build an itinerary for the big day with their photographer. While many weddings have similar events, not every event is of the same level of importance to every bride. Below is a basic outline of a standard American/Christian wedding, and what to be prepared for as the photographer.

Good Dallas wedding photographers will arrive at least two hours before the ceremony starts to take photos of the bride and groom getting ready for their big day. As with most wedding events, a large portion of the time spent on prep shots will be with the bride. Most bride want photos of her hair getting done and her make-up being made-up, as well as shots of the dress and shoes before she puts them on. If she has any special jewelry, a shot of that with her shoes or bouquet makes a good detail shot. Another important shot is the mother of the bride helping to lace up the dress. Also, try to capture any toasts or emotional moments between the bride and her bridesmaids.

For the groom, the getting ready process is much less involved. Usually, the groomsmen wait until about half an hour before they need to be ready to start getting ready or they simply show up already dressed. Luckily, the getting ready shots for the groom and his groomsmen are much quicker, and can be easily faked if they are already ready. Have the groom fix his tie in front of a mirror, fiddle with his cuff links, and pretend to tie his shoes, and you’ve captured most of what a guy does to get ready. If possible, get shots of his mother pinning on the boutonniere, as this is an image most of the mothers will be looking for.
